3 Back To School Tips For Children With Special Needs

It’s almost time to go back to school. The summer has just flown by!

Going back to school is a time in our lives that is exciting, but excitement can also be stressful. We want to give you a couple of pointers that will make going back to school a little less stressful.

But first — a reminder that even though school is about to start it is still really hot out there! Please make sure you keep yourself and your kids hydrated. Sometimes our kids aren’t able to tell us how thirsty they are, so make sure you give them plenty of water during this time!

Now, on to the tips for heading back to school:

1.  The biggest thing children struggle with about going back to school is going from an unstructured day to a structured day. We always recommended that families try to stay in some sort of routine over summer break. That way the routine of going back to school won’t be as stressful.

Hopefully you did that! But if you didn’t, We suggest putting some sort of routine back in your day now. Even some basic things like getting up at a certain time and going to bed at a certain time can help ease the transition. Start with those things. You can ease back into your school-time bedtime routine by setting bedtime for just 15 or 30 minutes earlier each week, until you work back to your school bedtime. That way when it’s time to go to bed for school, you won’t hear, “Gosh, Mom, I’m not ready to go to bed!”

2.  Another thing we always tell our families to do is go visit the school grounds, especially if it’s a new school. For some of you your child is going to a whole new campus, and it’s important to walk around that new campus and let them get familiar with it. Help them to find the bathrooms, the cafeteria, the office, all those important places they need to visit.

You can even show up the week before school when teachers are setting up their classrooms. You might even have the opportunity to meet the new teacher, and find out where your child will be sitting!

3.  Build in some fun academic times into your day, such as reading together, or pull out some workbooks and do some fun math. Remember, kids are going to go into a lot of structure from being completely unstructured the whole day. Even just 15 minutes of fun academic time, maybe twice a day, will help them ease back into the routine of sitting still and attending. This way that first day back at school is not a complete shock.

These are just a few basic ways you can make sure your children are prepared to start a great year at school. For more tips and to learn more about us, please visit our website at http://cuttingedgepediatrictherapy.com or fill out the contact form on this page if you have questions.
