Alcuin School recently kicked off the academic year at its General Parents' Meeting with more than 500 parents in attendance in the gymnasium. Walter Sorensen, Head of School, welcomed the audience and shared many of the exciting curriculum highlights and unique learning opportunities that the students will experience this fall.

Special presenters included: Maria Cintron Magennis, Board President; Andie Jackson and Misty Scott, Auction Co-Chairs; and Calvin and Kelly Carter, Annual Fund Chairs.

Parents also learned more about Alcuin’s sports teams and athletic programs, as well as an array of opportunities in environmental education, foreign language, visual and performing arts, choir and so much more.

After the kick-off, which included a rousing welcome for the Alcuin faculty and staff, parents visited individual classrooms to learn more details from their children’s teachers firsthand. The event was followed by a lovely open-air campus reception including food trucks hosted by the Alcuin Dads’ Club, which featured information booths for parent volunteer opportunities and the upcoming spring auction among others.

Yesterday, Alcuin School students celebrated Earth Day with a variety of fun, athletic and educational activities that focused on the importance of waste reduction, recycling and reuse. The students participated in informative presentations with representatives from the Trinity River Audubon Center and the Roger's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Special guests included Shiloh, Alcuin's live hawk mascot and his friend Ozzie, a black vulture. Following the presentations, students enjoyed a "no waste" picnic in the Commons where they were encouraged to recycle or compost any trash.

Congratulating each other at Dallas City Hall on the unanimous vote for Alcuin School’s new zoning request are (from left): Walter Sorensen, Head of School; Laurie Carroll, Buildings and Grounds Chair of the Board of Trustees; and Baron Ablon, President of the Board of Trustees.

Zoning Allows for Expansion of Alcuin Upper School, Campus Building Projects, and Renovations

Alcuin School, a leader in Montessori and International Baccalaureate® education, today announced that it received unanimous approval by the Dallas City Council for its zoning request.

The new zoning allows Alcuin to expand its Upper School to a maximum of 180 students, and build the Upper School on the existing Alcuin campus at 6144 Churchill Way in North Dallas.  Alcuin also gained approval to renovate current buildings and playground areas.

“The changes mean that our physical plant will match our educational excellence,” said Walter Sorensen, Alcuin Head of School.  “We also look forward to our continued support and engagement of the community, which is a mutually valued relationship that will benefit both the school and the neighborhood.”

Alcuin Board members, administration, staff and parent volunteers have devoted countless hours to this endeavor. This involved negotiations and compromises that earned support for Alcuin’s reallocation plans from the local neighbors and from the Dallas City Plan Commission.

Last month, the Plan Commission voted unanimously to pass Alcuin School’s rezoning request and recommended that it be passed by the Dallas City Council.

“It has taken us two years to gain the support of the neighbors and homeowner associations, and all our efforts were rewarded during the City Council meeting yesterday,” said Sorensen.

The passage of Alcuin’s request will continue to enhance the school’s growth.  Plans are for Alcuin to add grades 10 through 12 in high school over the next few years. This follows the enrollment of Alcuin’s inaugural freshman class last fall. These students will graduate as the school’s first senior class in May 2018.

Although current total enrollment from toddler through 9th grade is approximately 500, the campus will remain at no more than 700 as part of the reallocation.

“We want to thank everyone who has supported Alcuin School through this effort,” said Sorensen.  “We celebrate this significant accomplishment during Alcuin’s 50th anniversary year, and we welcome plans for future success as we move forward.”

Kelly Carter, Megen Manson (Auction Co-Chair), Brian Rogers (Board member), Jay Dyer

It was a night to remember at Alcuin School’s 50th Celebration Auction at the Fashion Industry Gallery on March 21.  Guests, including parents and supporters, attended this chic soiree themed “Back to the Future,” in celebration of Alcuin’s 50th anniversary led by co-chairs Janeen Cooter, Megen Manson and Keri Tonn.

In line with the theme, several guests wore a variety of creative costumes from their favorite decade from the 60s to the present.

Walter Sorensen, Head of School, was on hand to deliver special remarks, followed by dinner prepared by Chef Justo Blanco of Bolsa and a special musical performance by The Top Band.

One of the most significant contributions made with proceeds from the auction directly impacts each and every classroom at Alcuin School. These all important funds enrich the daily experiences Alcuin students have with their classroom environments. These improvements are made possible by the generosity of the Alcuin parent community and supporters.

Also, as in previous years, the proceeds from the gala fundraiser will support the Alcuin Parents’ Club commitment to the Alcuin 50th Capital Campaign.  These campaigns have provided funding for many special resources that directly enrich the experiences of each Alcuin student.  For example, several of the projects funded by this effort include: Alcuin’s Innovation Studio; libraries; art studio; science labs; the gymnasium; the Galbraith Family Building; the Motor Development Lab; and the organic garden, as well as so many additions and enhancements that make Alcuin so unique.

“We dedicate this year’s auction to the entire Alcuin community,” said Sorensen.  “The faculty and staff, parent body, and students are the cumulative glue that makes our community truly special.  The event raises significant funds for the Alcuin Parents’ Club Capital Campaign contribution, thus providing a venue for us to continue to grow and celebrate as a community.”

Alcuin School volunteers made a special check presentation during the recent Parents' Club meeting Feb. 4. Left to right: Patricia deLeon, Tatiana Camu, Veronica Diaz, Sharon Anderson, Mary Ann Campbell, Alcuin librarian, and Erin Dace. Seated is Misty Scott.

It was definitely a banner day at Alcuin School’s Underhill Library on Wednesday, Feb. 4.  During the monthly Alcuin School Parents' Club meeting, volunteers made a special check presentation in the amount of $10,328.29, representing the largest-ever contribution raised to benefit the school’s library. Visit: www.alcuinschool.org.

The donation was a culmination of funds generated during the school’s Annual Book Fair in November, sponsored by the Parents’ Club.  The effort was led by Book Fair Co-chairs:  Patricia DeLeon, Veronica Diaz, Tatiana Camu, and Erin Dance.  The team implemented unique ideas to make the school’s fundraiser  more like a boutique book store shopping experience, which helped spur sales this year.

In honor of these talented parents, a book entitled What Do You Do with an Idea?, has been dedicated to the Alcuin School Underhill Library.

The proceeds will be used to renew two Alcuin School community-wide online subscriptions (Tales2Go and BrainPop).  The donation will also fund a new computer dedicated to featuring photos and videos during classroom visits and  provide new research materials, among other educational amenities.

Many thanks go to Sharon Anderson and her staff at Half Price Books, Margaret Dai and other dedicated volunteers, in addition to the tireless work of Alcuin librarians Mary Ann Campbell and  Heather Tranchin.
