It seems like toys take over my backyard during the summer. From water guns to basketballs, my son drags anything and everything he can outside to play.
I recently decided to get control of the chaos with a DIY Outdoor Toy Box. This simple upcycle project turns a laundry hamper into something adorable you’ll be using for years to come!
We’ve partnered with Tulip ColorShot Instant Fabric Color to create this colorful project. This fabric spray adds permanent color to fabrics. The spray provides even coverage, dries soft, and dries quickly. It was the perfect way to add some fun colors to our toy box!
DIY Outdoor Toy Box
Here’s what you’ll need to make a DIY Outdoor Toy Box:
- Fabric laundry hamper or basket with lid
- Painter’s tape
- Tulip ColorShot Instant Fabric Color in your choice of colors
- Letter stencils
- Plastic table cloth
We used two bottles of Lemonade, one bottle of Coral, and one bottle of Mint to create our yellow toy box. We used two bottles of Coral, one bottle of Mint, and one bottle of Aubergine to create our coral toy box.
Start by covering your work surface with the plastic table cloth. It’s best to work in a well-ventilated area — we sprayed our project on our covered patio.
Add one layer of Lemonade paint to your hamper, covering it completely. This will be your base coat. Let the color dry for five minutes, and add another layer if you need it to fully coat the outside.
Let dry completely once you’ve reached the desired coverage. It took our hamper about 30 minutes to dry!
Cut out the letter stencils to spell T-O-Y-S. Use the painter’s tape to cover the area around the letters so you don’t get extra paint on it.
Use the tape to add a couple of stripes to the bottom, or any other design you’d like!
Spray on your accent colors, including the color for the letters. Repeat the layering process and allow to dry fully before removing the tape.
Now your toy box is ready to be filled!
