Summer.
How I love it…yet, it comes with complications.
For me, it is 3 boys who are not only out of school for 3 months, but not even wanting to THINK about school for three months.
Not even a little bit.
In the past, I have tried to put together a “fun” package of reading and math workbooks along with a summer reading list mom-style. It was a collection of workbooks and reading books packaged with notebooks and a three-ring binder.
Not only was it difficult to take when we traveled, it wasn’t well-received by the boys!
The thing about summer learning is that I want it to be fun. I looked for things that would make learning more of a game than a chore, but the choices were limited and what I pulled together had a lot of moving parts.
That is why I am so excited about Summer Brain Quest. Summer Brain Quest is the same Brain Quest fun, but with a full “curriculum” within one colorful book.

Did you know that most students lose about two months of grade equivalency in math and many also lose reading achievement during the summer?
I love how the simple games and brain puzzles in Summer Brain Quest can help put a stop to summer slide. Each book (available for grades K-6) is set up like a game. It has a pull-out map that guides the kid on a learning quest. Along the quest, they fill in their route by earning stickers for completing workbook pages as well as pursuing outdoor activities. The map offers a choice of routes allowing each learning experience to be unique. If your student has a passion for a certain type of learning game, they can do more of those along the way.
Part of the fun is the artwork designed by video game artist Edison Yan. When I opened the book, I wanted to sit down and join in!
My youngest son is entering the 6th grade next year so I had him investigate the 5-6 book.
We grabbed the book and headed for one of our favorite spots…
It is a trail near our house that leads to a lakeside park.
He looked through the book and chose a page he wanted to start on. We then went back and looked at the pull-out map to see what other things were along that path.
What I liked watching is that during this time, it wasn’t a chore for him to do these things. He was genuinely interested in the activities and was willing to keep going even when our time was up.
We headed home knowing that this summer was going to be more fun!
