Stonebriar Centre Celebrates Heart Health Saturday, February 25

To raise awareness about heart health, Stonebriar Centre presents a family event celebrating fun, fashion and wellness on Saturday, February 25 beginning at 11 a.m. The event, inspired by the American Heart Association’s February Heart Month campaign, will include local elementary-school students participating in a hula-hoop contest, a fashion show featuring retailers throughout the shopping center, demonstrations by FC Dallas professional soccer club and more.

Held on the lower level near Nordstrom, the event kicks off at 11 a.m. with a fashion show featuring activewear for men, women, teens and kids. The latest in fitness style, such as trendy activewear, cool sneakers and athletic shoes, will be on the runway and the models will be athletic types of all ages, including members of the FC Dallas soccer club.

Adding to the hoopla about hearts, students in kindergarten through sixth grades can participate in a Hula Hoop for Heart contest to see who can hula hoop the longest. According to the American Council on Exercise, hula hooping improves cardiovascular health, muscle tone and flexibility and the contest is designed to emphasize the need to commit to an exercise program and promote heart health early in life. Top hula hoopers in each category will receive heart healthy prizes, and the school with the most students participating will receive a $500 donation from Stonebriar Centre. Registration for the Hula Hoop for Heart contest is from 10 to 11 a.m. Hula hoops will be supplied for the contestants.

A highlight of the event will be appearances by members of FC Dallas, who will be offering quick-tip demonstrations and visiting with fans. Shoppers will also be able to get first-hand information about fitness equipment and gadgets. Representatives from Dick’s Sporting Goods and Sears will be on hand to answer questions and provide details about heart-healthy gear.

“Heart disease is often considered to be an ‘older man’s disease,’ yet the American Heart Association reports that it is the leading cause of death in the United States. More women die of cardiovascular disease than from the next four causes of death combined,” says Stacy Schuch, marketing manager for Stonebriar Centre. “We hope this event dedicated to promoting heart health will help raise awareness about how to prevent heart disease in individuals of all ages, from elementary school students to adults. The afternoon will be fun, but it will also make the point – take care of your heart.”

Activities will be held on the lower level near Nordstrom.
