Kids' Arts Courses at Wylie Recreation Center

Registration is underway for these great arts-related activities that begin in September at Wylie Recreation Center, 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 200, Wylie.

Drumming, for kids age 6 – 12, is held onTuesdays, Sept. 3 – 24, from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. They’ll learn to read rhythms, count music, discover drum rudiments, and groove to the beat on an electronic drum set, building the fundamental skills needed to advance to complex drum patterns. $59 plus $10 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class. Supplies can also be purchased in advance; list prints on receipt. Note: class meets Sept. 3, 10 and 17 at Wylie Senior Recreation Center, 800 Thomas St.

Sewing, for kids 8 – 14, is on Mondays, Sept 9 – 30, from 4 to 5 p.m. They’ll learn to read and follow directions, then cut and pin fabric and discover how to operate a sewing machine to make a drawstring bag, shorts, dresses, and a shirt. $59 plus $10 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class. Bring sewing machine; a few available upon request. Bring fabric and notions.

Ballet and Tap Combo, for age 5 – 10, is held on Tuesdays, Sept. 3 – 24, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Young dancers will learn fun and artistic choreography that emphasizes technique, coordination, and creativity. They’ll study proper foot placement, dance terminology, and body alignment while learning the fundamentals of ballet and tap. They should wear a black leotard and white tights and bring ballet and tap shoes. $49.

Piano, for age 6 – 12 will be Wednesdays, Sept. 4 – 25, from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Young musicians will learn to read music playing a variety of pieces, from simple songs to Beethoven’s sonatas. $45 plus $10 supply fee payable to instructor at the first class. Keyboard provided. Bring folder and pencil. Meet at Senior Recreation Center, 800 Thomas St., on Sept. 4, 11, and 18.

Jump and Tumble, for age 2 – 4, will be Thursdays, Sept. 5 – 26, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Kids will use a variety of interactive equipment, rotating through tumble-based stations. Progressive learning and age-appropriate curriculum increases strength, builds confidence, and improves sensory sills. Kids should wear athletic clothes. $45.

Tutus and Tap, age 2 – 4, is held on Tuesdays, Sept. 3 – 24 at two times: 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. or 5:45 to 6:15 p.m. Kids will learn the techniques needed to build a foundation in ballet, tap, and rhythm. They’ll enjoy a variety of fun equipment such as balls, hula hoops, and mats. They should wear a black leotard and white tights and bring ballet and tap shoes.  $39.
