Sports Activities for Kids at Wylie Rec

Wylie Recreation Center offers a full menu of kids’ sports instruction starting in September. The rec is located on the Wylie Municipal Complex at 300 Country Club Rd., Bldg. 200.

There are two sections of Soccer Shots Thursdays, Sept. 12 - Nov. 14: age 3 – 4, 3:30 to 4:05 p.m., and age 5 – 6, 4:15 to 4:50 p.m. Kids will develop teamwork skills, enhance coordination, and discover basic soccer techniques such as dribbling, shooting, and running while moving a ball. Individual and group activities familiarize participants with the game while preparing young bodies for an active childhood. Tennis shoes only; no cleats. $120.

Two sections of Soccer Sparks are offered on Tuesdays, Sept 10 – Oct. 15: age 7 – 9, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m., and age 10 - 12, 6:15 to 7 p.m. Kids will develop soccer and social skills participating as a group in a structured activity. They’ll enhance dribbling, passing, shooting, and active teamwork strategies. Tennis shoes only; no cleats. $75.

Tennis also has classes for two age groups on Saturdays, Sept 7 - 28. Age 5 – 7 is from 10 to 11 a.m., and age 8 – 11 is from 11 a.m. to noon. Kids will learn the thrilling game of tennis, including focusing on instruction of basic techniques such as serving, volleying, and forehand/backhand strokes. Features United States Tennis Association Quickstart curriculum. Kids should bring a tennis racquet. Cost is $59. There’s also Drill & Play on the same days for age 12 – 15 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Teens will practice specialized skills and then immediately incorporate them in a tennis match. Cost is $75.

Volleyball is offered on Wednesdays from Sept. 4 – 25. Kids 7 – 11 will meet from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and age 12 – 16 will meet at 7:35 to 8:35 p.m. They’ll practice basic volleyball skills like digging, spiking, and serving, moving through various rotations and plays individually and as a team. They should bring a pair of kneepads. Cost is $45.

Karate is offered for Beginners, Intermediate, and Advanced learners. Kids age 7 - 14 will focus on the Ryubukai Okinawan art of self-defense employing hand strikes and kicks with swift and calculated movements used to disable or subdue an opponent. Beginners is offered on Wednesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 30, from 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. No class Sept. 25, Oct. 2 or 9. Uniform is optional. Intermediate, Wednesdays, Sept. 4 through Oct. 23, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. No class on Sept. 25 or Oct. 2. Optional $30 supply fee for belt test payable to the instructor. Uniform optional. Advanced is on Thursdays, Sept. 5 through Oct. 24, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. No class on Sept. 26 or Oct. 3. Optional $30 supply fee for belt test payable to the instructor. Uniform required. Cost is $45 for all levels.

Rock Climbing Techniques is offered Saturdays, Sept. 14 and 28, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for kids 10 – 16. Participants will work through basic climbing skills and bouldering techniques, and gain strengthening and conditioning training. Sept. 14 is Bouldering, where kids will practice explosive movements and learn how to fall correctly; Sept. 28 is High Ropes, where they’ll improve weight shifting and flagging, then advance toward heel hooks and dynamic movements. Cost is $10 for each class.
