January brings new opportunities to read and share great books and activities for kids from first through 12th grade at Wylie’s Smith Library. 

My Very Own Book Club, for first and second graders, meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 15 or 17. Kids are encouraged to read January’s title, “Penguin and the Cupcake,” by Ashley Spires, on their own and then come to the meeting for a group reading, discussion, and a craft. Sign them up at the Children’s Desk. Participation is limited, but all participants get a free copy of the book. 

Kids in third grade are invited to head for the library from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 23 for 3rd Grade Voyagers Club. Each month, a different topic is explored and kids participate in a hands-on activity. Registered participants receive a challenge each month to prepare them for the scheduled activity. Sign them up at the Children’s Desk to receive the challenge. Space is limited. January’s challenge is “Find Your Zen - Yoga with Christy Stout.” 

BeTween Book & Movie Club, for fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, is from 6 to 7 p.m. Jan. 30. Kids are invited to read January’s title, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” by J.K. Rowling, on their own and then watch the movie of the same name. At the meeting on Jan. 30, they’ll watch scenes from the movie, read excerpts from the book, discuss, and have a snack. Sign them up at the Children’s Desk; the first 50 kids to sign up get a free copy of the book. 

Kids in grades six through 12 are invited to the Teen Book Club from 6 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 9. January’s title is “An Ember in the Ashes,” by Sabaa Tahir. Snacks and drinks are provided at the meeting. Stop by the Teen Room for more information and to register.

It's also time to vote for your favorite book on the Texas Bluebonnet List! All votes from third through sixth graders will be submitted to the Texas Library Association to be counted toward the official Bluebonnet Award tally. In order to vote, kids must have read at least five books from the list. Everyone is invited to vote just once at the Children's Desk.
