Back-to-School Picture Frame

Show off your kid’s first day of school photo with this adorable back-to-school picture frame.

We’ve partnered with Imperial Sugar to bring you this fun craft that your kids can help you create! We sharpened pencils to different lengths to go around the frame, and sealed them with a special homemade decoupage made with Imperial Sugar.

Back-to-School Picture Frame

Here’s what you need to make this Back-to-School Picture Frame:

  • 4×6 wooden picture frame
  • Acrylic paint (we used a golden yellow)
  • Wood glue
  • Sponge brush
  • 20 pencils
  • Pencil sharpener
  • 1 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup Imperial Sugar Extra Fine Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon oil (grapeseed, olive, etc.)
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Paint your frame a solid color using the acrylic paint. Allow to dry completely.

Use the pencil sharpener to sharpen the pencils to the right length. You’ll want 2 pencils in every length, descending in length to reach the inside of the frame. Each side of the frame will have 5 pencils in place.

Spread the wood glue onto each side of the frame and place the pencils in the correct position. Allow to dry completely. The wood glue should dry clear.

Meanwhile, mix together the flour, sugar, water, and oil in a saucepan on low heat, stirring constantly. The mixture will become smooth as it heats through. Once the lumps are gone, remove from heat.

Use the sponge brush to coat the pencils in the homemade decoupage. Make sure to get the ends of the pencils completely coated so that they won’t mark once the seal has set.

Allow to dry overnight.
