A giant THANK YOU to everyone who came out this past Saturday to play with us during our Cardboard Challenge! We raised $ 100.00 for the Imagination Foundation, an awesome charity that fosters creativity and entrepreneurialism in children. We were amazed at some of the creations made from cardboard and plastic containers that would have ended up in the trash. We'll be posting photos taken by our friend, Carissa to The Lab's Facebook page this week.

Our Sunday was busy, too, as the Lab Rats were on hand to entertain the families who participated in Community Partners of Dallas' Change is Good event. Alex and Connor were most excited about the Storm Trooper, go figure!

Don't forget about our new after-school classes, occurring most Wednesdays this school year. The Lab's website has been recently updated, so you can see the dates and prices for these as well as our Fall and Winter Camp offering.

And if you can't see us for awhile, please know that we miss you. And please consider making something from "trash" this week. I am still amazed at the extent to which the moms and dads at our PLAY event were excited to help their babies with their creations. It reminded me why I started The Lab in the first place - to engage in safe, smart, restriction-free exploration. As much as I have done this for my kids and for yours, I must admit that I am having fun everyday in The Lab. Thank you all for understanding us and for your continued support! ~Mess Wright

PLAY in Dallas

This Saturday, October 6   2:00pm - 5:00pm

Beautiful weather is here, and we're ready to play! Join us as we host Dallas' only Cardboard Challenge event, benefitting the Imagination Foundation.

The Lab at Lakewood is proud to sponsor an afternoon of free play this Saturday afternoon inspired by Caine's Arcade. Come out to Junius Street, enjoy healthy snacks and use your imagination to construct anything you desire from cardboard pieces.

The Lab will supply tape, markers and paint. Please bring clean cardboard and plastic containers. Let's turn trash into treasure together. Minimum donation of $10.00 per family suggested but not required. Profits to benefit Imagination Foundation.

We will also be presenting information on The Lab's new "PLAY" component, coming in 2013.

See below for a link to the Caine's Arcade/Cardboard Challenge video.

Columbus Day Explorer Camp

Monday, October 8  6:00pm - 8:30pm

We are thrilled to have completed 11 weeks of successful Summer Camps at The Lab! Now, we look forward to Autumn; we figure you're ready to welcome Fall, too.

Have the kids made you crazy? Need some time to shop? We’ve added one more science day camp before the school year begins.

We're calling it, "Rockets, Reactions and Reptiles, oh my!" This camp takes place August 13-17 and will offer a bit of physics, chemistry and animal science. As always, the camp will run 9:30am- 2:00pm each day and will include snacks. (Doors open at 9:00am.) Campers should bring a cold sack lunch, but everything else will be provided.

Camp costs $ 250.00 or $ 60.00 per day. Only six spots remain, so please don't hesitate to email us: info@thelabdallas.com to sign up.

Thanks to everyone who supported The Lab this Summer.

Look for our Fall and Winter Program information by September 15.

Rockets, Reactions and Reptiles, oh my!

This week, The Lab is hosting its S.C.I. Camp. Kids will explore the human body, learn the science behind magic and collect evidence to solve a wacky "crime" committed by Einstein the ferret. We are accepting drop-ins this week. As the rest of the Summer our camps are very full, we will not be accepting any more campers for the camps beginning on July 23, July 30 or August 6.

We are, however, adding one more camp before the 2012-2013 school year begins. We're calling it, "Rockets, Reactions and Reptiles, oh my!" This camp will run August 13-17 and will offer a bit of physics, chemistry and animal science. As always, the camp will run 9:30am- 2:00pm each day and will include snacks. (Doors open at 9:00am.) Campers should bring a sack lunch, but everything else will be provided. Camp will cost $ 250.00 or $ 60.00 per day. We anticipate this one will fill-up fast, so please don't hesitate to call us today at 214-901-4280 to reserve your child's spot. You may also email us: info@thelabdallas.com

If you can't make it to Camp soon, try checking us out this Thursday, July 19, 11:00am - noon at the Lakewood Whole Foods Store Kid's Club event.

As always, thanks for your support. The Summer is going great for us this year at The Lab. We couldn't do it without you!

This week was eventful for The Lab. On Wednesday, we constructed over 100 air dart shooters with the Campers at Wesley Rankin Community Center.  And on Thursday, we received lots of help from East Dallas kids when we filled and launched a giant Solar Balloon at the Lakewood Whole Foods store Kids Club meeting.

Still, the most fun was had on-site at The Lab during this week’s camp, “Art Meets Science”. We tie-dyed Lab at Lakewood t-shirts, reupholstered our favorite chair with duct tape squares, and constructed robots from junk (lots of our campers learned to solder in the process).  As part of our “Local Business Weekly Guest Star” program, we hosted Cockrell Iron and Paint (www.ironandpaint.com). Stew taught campers how to construct their own homemade Bat Houses. Everyone got to decorate the house they built for take-home.

Next week, June 25-June 29, we will conduct the first Chemistry Kids camp of the year. Camp is full, so we regretfully cannot take drop-ins, however, I will be offering an impromptu camp on July 2 and 3. Please see details below.

As always, thank you for supporting The Lab at Lakewood. I hope you all enjoy the attached photos!

Greetings from The Lab,

This week’s “Camp with a Conscience” has been very inspiring for us. We are amazed at some of the circuits the campers constructed given solar panels and generators as the only power source (no batteries or “plugging in” allowed). Today, we had a visit from Heather from the Texas Worm Ranch. She brought us a pound of worms and showed us how to run a proper worm bin. Our campers delighted in shredding paper and making a pile of compostable material from their leftover lunches.

Next week, Science Meets Art at The Lab. We still have some space, so we will be accepting week-long campers ($250) and daily drop-ins with reservation and pre-payment ($60 per day). Consider having your little one join us for tie-dying, duct tape accessories and polymer painting.

Call 214-901-4280 or email info@thelabdallas.com to sign up.

The Texas Honeybee Guild made a special appearance today at The Lab at Lakewood. A fun and energetic group of 24 school-aged campers celebrated their final day of The Lab's "Animals: LIVE!" camp by viewing an active hive and a queen bee at work. All campers snacked on graham crackers and The Guild's own whipped honey.

Space is still available in next week's "Camp with a Conscience" at The Lab. Campers will explore the sun with solar cooking, will re-purpose items when "Trash Becomes Treasure" and will visit with guests from Texas Worm Ranch on "Composting Day". The Lab staff will simulate an oil spill, and campers will band together for a cool "hazmat clean-up" experience.

Camps are open to school-aged kids and run 9:30a-2:00p Monday-Friday. $250.00 for the whole week or "drop-in" for $60.00 per day. Call 214-901-4280 or email info@thelabdallas.com for more information.
Fill your child's summer with fun and education. The Lab at Lakewood, a fun place for kids to explore science.
